Bittersweet Medicine
A cutting-edge treatment turning a terminal diagnosis into hope for a healthy life.
A toddler with a rare and devastating inherited condition has become the first child to be treated in the UK with a lifesaving gene therapy. The drug, called Libmeldy, is the most expensive medicine in Europe, costing nearly three million pounds ($3.48m) per patient. For the family it is bittersweet as only one of the two children can be saved. The Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ's medical editor Fergus Walsh has followed the treatment at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital over several months and has this exclusive report.
