Farms in the European Union will be allowed to use Glyphosate, despite calls for the fertilizer to be banned, following a report from the World Health Organisation that warned it probably causes cancer. The European Commission said 18 countries had backed the use of the weedkiller, with nine member nations voting against it and one abstaining. It has been given a green light for five years. Pekka Pesonen, the Secretary General of Copa-Cogeca, a body that represents farmers and cooperatives in the European Union, welcomes the decision to allow use of the weedkiller.
