The sacred drummers of Burundi

Newsday

Available for over a year

Since ancient times, drums have been considered sacred in Burundi. Traditionally, the word ingoma meant both drums and kingdom. UNESCO is this week considering whether to add Burundi's "Ritual Dance of the Royal Drum" to a list it calls "The Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity". Jean Marie Ninziza is one the Abatimbo Burundi Drummers from Burundi, and explains what makes the music so special.
