A distinctive part of the structure of Consider the Lilies is Iain Crichton Smith's use of flashback. The first half of the book alternates between events in the present and in the past. Why did the author choose to structure the book this way, rather than, for example, chronologically? What effect does this have?

We'll look at the effects of flashback, using Chapter 4 as an example. In preparation, read from Chapter 3 straight into Chapter 5, missing out Chapter 4.
