The idea for Urban Classic originally came from the promoters Bigga Fish, whose motto is 'Education Through Entertainment'. They are a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to educating 13-21 year-olds through music. Their idea was to fuse three very different musical cultures: grime, hip hop and classical. With the help of conductor Charles Hazlewood, live music producers Serious, Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ 1xtra and Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Radio 3, they brought together the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Concert Orchestra, arranger and jazz musician Jason Yarde, UK grime producer DaVinChe and an array of MCs to conceive and stage a live event at the Hackney Empire in London.
The resulting 70-minute suite was premiered in front of a live audience in Hackney on 16 February 2006, and recorded for broadcast on Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Radio 3 and Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ 1xtra.

Mark Russell caught up with Charles Hazlewood at rehearsals for the show, backstage at the Hackney Empire. As well as regularly working with the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Concert Orchestra, Charles Hazlewood is music director of the Excellent Device orchestra and the period instrument orchestra Harmonieband, joint artistic director of the South African Dimpho Di Kopane theatre company, and presenter of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Radio 3's Discovering Music programme.

Faith SFX, from North West London, began beatboxing in 2003, and has become one of the art's finest exponents, lending his skills to UK underground artists like SLK, Akala, Professor Green and Narstie, opening for international hip hop acts like Ludacris and Mobb Deep, and even appearing on a TV mobile phone advert.

Pase is a 19 year-old rapper born in South East London of Irish and Guyanese roots.

From East London, Tor is a vocalist and MC whose weekly radio MC slot led to her appearing on the debut 'Get Up and Move' single from So Solid Crew's Harvey in 2002. Since then she has worked with a number of leading UK producers such as Fusion, First Man, Lethal & Destruction and Wonder, as well as recently working in the USA with Notorious BIG/LL Cool J/Lauryn Hill producer Rashad Smith.

Interview: DaVinChe (3.16)
One of the two arrangers behind Urban Classic, DaVinChe is a leading light on the UK grime scene. Grime is a musical style which evolved mainly in East London out of UK garage, mixing in elements of UK hip hop, drum'n'bass, and punk and techno. DaVinChe is determined to develop the genre into something more widely recognised. As well as being a studio producer and engineer, he is a classically trained arranger and multi-instrumentalist.

The other arranger on the project is jazz saxophonist, composer and producer Jason Yarde. Mixing It caught up with him on his way to play a gig with legendary Nigerian drummer Tony Allen. Jason Yarde joined the Jazz Warriors as a teenager, and progressed to becoming their musical director. He has also studied in New Jersey with Joe Lovano, and arranged and composed in a variety of styles for a number of different projects, including Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ2, The Cheltenham Jazz Festival and the Phoenix Dance Company.
