Halima Aden: My Hijab and Me on the Catwalk

Halima Aden is a Muslim from Kenya who wears the hijab. She’s also a supermodel.

Halima Aden is a Muslim, Somali-American from Kenya who wears the hijab. She’s also a supermodel working with some of the world’s biggest fashion labels and photographers, and the first hijab-wearing model to feature on the cover of British Vogue.

“I am not afraid of being the first”, she says with a smile. “I have an opportunity, through my modelling, to change the way that Muslim women are viewed, to give them a platform to have their voices heard, I’m mindful, and proud, of that responsibility.”

This Heart and Soul follows Halima as she models on catwalks across the globe, to explore how she stays faithful to Islam while displaying herself so publicly.

At New York Fashion Week she demands to wear her hijab in all shows and shoots, and explains how that has led to friction with designers. But she also faces conflict with her family, who don’t approve, telling her that she is “not being Muslim enough”.

Can Halima maintain a supermodel career and her relationship with her faith?
