Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro took office at the beginning of the year with a promise to bring military values to a country weary of political corruption scandals. Intersex people are those born with a combination of male and female biological characteristics. There is a cultural stigma attached to intersex children, and many undergo surgery to assign their sex after birth, though this can also be problematic in later life.
