It's been a long hot summer in Essex and with no rainfall in July at all, the county is now officially in drought. 2026 has seen record-breaking temperatures for many parts of the country, with Essex already experiencing four heatwaves this year.

The prolonged hot and dry weather has prompted Essex and Suffolk Water to introduce a hosepipe ban for the first time in nearly 30 years. The restrictions come just weeks after Anglian Water announced a hosepipe ban for the east of England.

Tendring is the only area of Essex exempt from the measures. Affinity Water says it currently has "sufficient supplies to meet customer demand", adding "we review the situation every day and all options remain under constant consideration."
