How Halfords started in Leicester鈥檚 Halford Street
Retailers Halfords and Currys opened their first shops in Edwardian Leicester.
In Edwardian Leicester cycling was big business.
Halfords, the well-known retailer takes its name from Leicester鈥檚 Halford Street, where its founder Frederick Rushbrooke opened a store in 1902 and started selling cycling goods. Halfords expanded rapidly, with 200 stores by 1931.
Leicester was also the birthplace of Currys, where Henry Curry started to make bicycles in 1884 after leaving his previous employer N Corah and Sons.
The city soon became a focus for promoting cycling as a recreational pastime and a sport.
