Ex-funeral director Robert Bush has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for abusing the trust of grieving families, including denying proper burials, giving families the ashes of strangers, and defrauding hundreds of customers through funeral plans and charity collections.
The case has exposed the lack of mandatory regulation in the funeral industry, prompting victims' families, MPs, and the Prime Minister to back calls for legally enforced inspections, standards and penalties for funeral directors.
Industry representatives say most funeral directors act with dignity and professionalism, but argue compulsory regulation is needed to prevent rogue operators from exploiting vulnerable families and to restore public trust.
