Before making any purchase, Martin says you should always ask yourself the money mantra: 鈥淒o I need it? Can I afford it? Have I checked if it鈥檚 available cheaper elsewhere?鈥�

鈥淚f you鈥檙e buying an item of significant price, do a price comparison first.鈥� Many price comparison websites are available for free Martin says.

Sometimes no matter how smart your spending, it just doesn鈥檛 work out and it鈥檚 time for a trip back to the shops but this time to return an item.

If you find yourself in this situation Martin says, 鈥渕any of the rules that affect our consumer rights aren鈥檛 statutory, they鈥檙e not set by law, they鈥檙e set by stores鈥�.

Crucially, this includes your right to return a purchase, 鈥渟hops are under no legal obligation to take something back unless it鈥檚 faulty,鈥� however many stores do have a return policy.

However, store policy does not affect your statutory rights and Martin has a handy acronym to remember them, 鈥楽AD FART鈥欌�� he explains below.
