A spiritual comment and prayer to start the day with Rev Carolyn Skinner

Good morning.

Last summer I holidayed in France and amidst the delights of freshly baked croissants, delicious cheese, and beautiful beaches, I was particularly struck by the fields of stunning sunflowers, these swathes of gold brightening up the landscape.

I always think of sunflowers as happy flowers, a flower which makes me smile and lifts my spirit. Perhaps it’s the bright yellow petals and the sun-like appearance which seems to evoke feelings of happiness.

Sunflowers are known for their ability to grow tall and strong, even in adverse conditions. They can withstand harsh weather, poor soil, and limited resources, making them a powerful symbol of resilience.

What I love most about sunflowers is their ability to track the movement of the sun throughout the day. In the morning, they look east toward the sunrise. As the day goes on, they follow the sun across the sky and then move from west to east overnight as part of their circadian clock. I find that fascinating and it prompted me to reflect on where I focus my attention and find strength. There are many things clamouring for our attention, appealing to our desires, trying to derail us. Our gaze can quite easily be distracted. As a Christian it’s important for me to keep my eyes on Jesus throughout my day. From that place I gain strength.

Psalm 16:8 says ‘I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.’

As we go into this day, where will we direct our gaze?

Lord Jesus, thank you that you are my light and my source of strength. Help me to fix my eyes on you today.
