Natural Born Killer, Part 2

Episode 6 of 8

Phone evidence reveals the brutal extent of Matthew Jonathan's violence against Jamie Gawler. Meanwhile, the Vulnerable Persons Unit investigates a near-fatal assault in Telford.

In Hereford, detectives continue to build their case against Matthew Jonathan for the murder of 54-year-old Jamie Gawler. The suspect maintains a ‘no comment’ stance in interviews, so the team is relying on digital and physical forensics to piece together the final days of Jamie's life. Financial tracking shows Jonathan using the victim's bank card, while Jamie's family describe a naturally solitary man whose kindness led him to take Jonathan in, sheltering him from the winter cold.

A critical forensic breakthrough comes when analysts match an incomplete, bloody footprint from the scene to Jonathan's rare boots via a national database. Soon after, investigators recover a series of phone videos that reveal the true extent of the assault.

In a separate case, the force's Vulnerable Persons Unit takes over a harrowing domestic call-out in Telford. Officers find a woman fighting for her life after a brutal assault with a meat cleaver. Her partner, Lee Sargent, is arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Sargent insists he acted in self-defence, claiming his partner attacked him first. However, a review of the body-worn footage and medical records casts serious doubt on his account.

Miraculously, after extensive surgery, the victim survives the assault, although she is left with severe, life-changing injuries. She later shares her account of enduring years of increasingly coercive control.
