The British Asian female boxers breaking barriers
British Asian female boxers Charan Dhesi and Malaika Atique on punching through barriers in the ring.
Female boxers Charan Kaur Dhesi and Malaika Atique have their sights firmly set on making their mark in the ring. Charan is Britain’s first female Sikh professional boxer. Malaika is a young heavyweight hoping to turn professional and become Britain’s first Pakistani female champion. Both have faced stereotypes, limited representation and other challenges from stepping into a space where they weren’t always expected.
Speaking to Monika Plaha, Charan and Malaika talk about the barriers they’ve faced, the visibility they lacked growing up, and what it means to show younger girls that boxing can be for them too.
