Supermarket shoppers

A third supermarket?

A survey has shown that 84% of islanders would support a third supermarket. Have your say...

The cost of food is one of the core issues at the centre of pub chat in the island – that and the time of the boat in the morning for people that complain – but that’s another feature for another day.

Discussion of a third supermarket chain isn't just happening in pubs either - last year the JCRA asked if islanders wanted a third supermarket and now a survey has shown that they do.

A survey has shown that 84% of islanders would support a third supermarket.

Co-Op and Checkers

The survey, of 2000 randomly-selected households, found that more than 80% of people in Jersey would be in favour of a third supermarket operator.

The States asked 2,000 randomly-selected households across the island for their views on food shopping.

Eighty-four per cent said they would be in favour of a new supermarket chain on the island. About 70% were not worried other shops could be forced to close.

Duncan Gibaut of the States' Statistical Unit said the majority of residents are in favour of a new supermarket chain.

He explained that: "When we asked the question the result was more than 8 out of 10 people, strictly 84% were in favour of a third supermarket operator coming into the island.”

And of those 7 out of 10 islanders say they are not concerned that a third large supermarket in Jersey might see the closure of existing food shops.

Mr Gibaut added that about 70% of the two-thousand people surveyed were not happy with the current range of supermarkets...

He said: "Are people concerned that supermarkets they currently use might close, or less local food might be available or smaller shops closer to home might close?

"If a third supermarket operator came into Jersey would you be concerned that supermarkets you currently use might close? About seven out of ten were not concerned.

"That is, if a third supermarket operator came into Jersey seven out of ten people were not concerned that one of the current supermarkets may close."

The big four supermarkets in the UK

Jersey is more expensive

After a study into the cost of food shopping by the JCRA in 2007, Chief Executive of the JCRA, Chuck Webb says previous studies of food shopping in Jersey, the Isle of Man (which has a third supermarket) and the UK suggested it was more expensive here.

Chuck told ĢƵ Jersey that “on average, Jersey, for the basket of goods we looked at, Jersey was the most expensive, the UK was the least expensive and the Isle of Man was somewhere in between.

“The Isle of Man has three supermarkets, one of which just happened to be a Tesco. Our 2005 study would suggest that the entry of a new supermarket to an island economy would lower the prices somewhat but not to a UK level.”

Over to you

So should a third supermarket chain be allowed to open in the island or would it have too much of an impact on island owned businesses?

If a third supermarket where to open which company would you prefer - a large UK supermarket, an American giant or one of the big European players?

Should more be done to help the islands small businesses prosper instead of allowing another large company in? Do you think the cost of living will reduce with the introduction of a third supermarket chain?

I have just arrived on the island and the local prices are very high. Give ASDA , tesco or morrisons a chance. The local stores need a swift kick up the ???

Daniela
I think that Jersey should start looking a little bit more to Continental Europe. It would be great to have a Carrefour o the island, it might be easier to bring things from France rather than the UK. Housing and renting prices affect the living costs and running cost of any local business, so its also crazy that local eggs or milk is more expensive that the UK one!

crP47
Well! three phone suppliers, three fuel suppliers and only two food suppliers. Cars and phones are obviously more important than food.

Stephanie Luce
I think that due to the recent changes in prices for example GST it is about time that something was done to lower the prices of food, at the moment it seems all that is happening is food prices are on a sharp rise.

Tescos, Asda all the way!!!!!!!!!
Buy local & keep the profits in the shop owners pockets more like while we get screwed by their greediness. Buy online is my moto. Money saved is better in my pocket than money robbed off us by local buisnesses. The faster they let UK stores in the better. Take Checkers for example Bottle of Moet Champers £26.99 whilst Co-op £19.99. Ned I say more!!!

SJ
Natalie there are plenty of places to build a supermarket. old pontins site anyone?I think that people who dont think we need one and the shops we have are enough are the ones who dont struggle with monthly food shopping. Try thinking of those that do struggle!

KAREN WALKER
we dont need to help smaller buisness they survive by them selves.yes a third super market is ideal as long as you get value for money. it is good to see iceland products but all in the same shop would be far better.

natalie
no coz there is no room 2 put it1 well there mite be but that mite mean knocking houses down no way!!!

Dave
Buy local and keep the profits in the island to stimulate the local economy or bring in an outside company who, in turn, will take the profits elsewhere.

Trev
I don't think the prices in a TESCO LOCAL would be as expensive as SPAR

kabfire
It wasn't so long ago we had five supermarkets - the questions of driving out smaller operaters didn't arise then. Who's protecting who??I believe the european discount stores like Lidl & Aldi would be a better option - a little harder to blame high price on freight for a start.

Stephen
Why do supermarkets always have special offers and are dead cheap? Because the bleed the famers dry for profits and outcompete all the local shops.Having cheaper food is good but it is cheap for a reason and not a good one. Why do you think Iceland food is so cheap? Just look at the back of the packet in the ingredients list and you will find your answer. Why do we need another supermarket when we can just buy fresh local produce?

John
"I think you got ample you got co op checkerssafeways M&s"We don't have co-op, checkers safeway and M&S - we have co-op and Sandpiper.

Sandpiper own Checkers, Safeway, Iceland and the M&S franchise.

When they talk about a third supermarket they're talking about a third independent operator.

Ashley F
Just bring over the cheapest and let the others fight it out in a price war. There's 90 thousand people over here - they all need feeding - it's not a daft idea - get it sorted people!

Steve
It seems phones are more important than food in Jersey......Well it must be as we are allowed three mobile phone operators but not three independent supermarkets.

susan
No not Tesco awful irresponsible corporation

steven nicolle
the reason the tesco express is more expensive its a corner shop or convience store has I work for the superstore/extra but there is some items in the express store which are cheaper

steven nicolle
I`m a jersey exile I work for Tesco and after listening to my family its asplit for and against thing is has the island got the room for another supermarket I think you got ample you got co op checkerssafeways M&s

Scarface
If you let in another supermarket chain, the CARTEL of co-op and sandpiper will all but vanish, which is a shame because then it'll be the first legal market in Jersey!Steve Bishop, why on earth would the locals want a tesco on the waterfront!!!? you ever been to any harbours/waterfronts around the world? in fact you ever been out of a 2 miles radius of St.Helier? such a bean

Dot
I would like a French one rather than a UK one.

Sarah Collins
Tesco isnt that cheap, I think a Lidl would be great but as for anything else they would put their prices up not down. Tesco have different prices for their stores, a tesco express is much more expensive that a regular tesco.

jonny
I think you will find that Tom Scott and Crew will be gone after the big sell out. Then you will see that any supermarket can come in!!!!

Steve Bishop
If they allow Tesco to come into Jersey, when will it happen? and where would it go? The most likely site would be part of the new developments around the waterfront and that could mean it will be years before it happens. Don't hold your breath on this one folks! The States have a habit of telling us certain things will happen and then conveniently forgetting to bring it to fruition.

Steve
Yes Margaret, this is NOT a new debate - But as ever we can only hope that this time it happens. If not, then the only conclusion has to be that vested interests have won again and as an community, we are stuck with the same old situation. I suppose we shouldn't complain: after all, we have the best politicians money can buy and surely they can be trusted to listen to the public by doing things in the interests of the people?Look at their track record and decide that for yourselves!

Margaret
As most of us know this is not a new debate at all - I for one would love to see another supermarket it is long overdue for us shoppers to have more choices. Lets put an end to the consumer being ripped off (in Jersey its robbery with violence).

Alphonse
Why should we have competition in the shops when we have no choice in our polictical "elected" leaders? Does anyone remember voting Frank Walker into power? If that question ever goes back to the electorate it will be a very different answer. With a 3rd supermarket, we can only pray that the people's voice is listened to this time.

Mike R D
We love shopping at Asda and Tesco and Morrisons. The price of a normal family shopping is about 60% of what we pay here, plus there are always loads of bargains and offers. It was bad day for Jersey when Tom Scott bought Safeway. We were in Safeway the day it was announced and have never set foot in there since. We support, and will always support the Co-Op, but it woudl be nice to have a third option

jack vanren
yes we do why not five?

wendy furmidge
I would love more choice for food shopping over here tesco/asda would be great our money may just go that bit further

Neil
Having just come from the IOM, the competition seems healthy there, so why notCome on Tesco! Lets have you and see what you can do!

Christine
Yes we do need another Supermarket, we need competition, we had 4 different supermarkets before, now only 2! there is room for another one, so we can choose.

bob evans
jersey needs competition third or forth supermarket best price wins.

Rita
This debate is not a new one!!! people have been saying this for qute a while now and more recently when the odeon was in the throes of being refurbished and offices and a "supermarket"was suggested and yes yes yes we need more competition why do we have to be dictated to by Le Riches and the Co-op about where we shop? i say definiatly bring in a different supermarket maybe then the others would (1) lower there prices and (2? they would bring more varieties of food etc and then we would have a more of a choice why not??????

JDA
SQN LEADER I AGREE 100% WITH U THERE, EXAMPLE WENT TO BUY SHAMPOO IN CO-OP & IT WAS B.O.G.O.F WHICJ WAS GREAT VALUE AT £3.28 FOR 2 BOTTLES, THEY HAD THE SAME SHAMPOO IN LE RICHE IN TOWN AT £6.32 & IT WAS NOT B.O.G.O.F, NOW CAN ANYBODT TELL ME HOW ON EARTH THEY CAN JUSTFY THAT EXTORTIONATE DIFFERENCE IN PRICE & I AM SURE WE ARE ALL AWARE HOW BADLY WE ARE BEING RIPPED OFF, IT CAN DIFFER FROM £1 - £2 - £3 - DIFFERENCE FOR THE SAME GOODS IN DIFFERENT STORES, THERE HAS TO BE A STOP PUT TO THIS ONCE & FOR ALL WE HAVE PUT UP WITH BEING RIPPED OFF LONG ENOUGH.

Marcus
The truth of the matter is if Tesco, Wal-mart, Sainsbury’s wanted to set up in the island they would. The reason there are not here is simply the cost of getting goods into the Jersey is too expensive. Many UK towns are now regretting allowing the supermarket giants to destroy their local shop

Gary
About time too. There far too little competition (and range of goods) all round on this island. Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Asda - any of the above would bring a little reality into the island. I think 'Not Darren's argument about less than cost items would not be an issue with a new operator having to get the goods to Jersey in the first place, but at least there would be a possibility of the people living here not being ripped off any more.

Sqn Leader C Gull
I doubt if there is room for another supermarket, let alone a large UK chain like Tesco. What is needed, however, is the competition regulation authority here in Jersey actually having the balls to stand up and say that locals are being ripped off left right and centre for basic commodities and forcing the existing players to realistically price their goods. “Not Darren” is correct in saying that the UK chains mercilessly destroy small high street stores.

Not darren
While i agree with Darren i would like to ask for a common sense when choosing the company to come to Jersey. I believe it should be a food retailer only. Tesco, Asda and others go out thier way to destroy the localmarket by offering less than cost items. This could destory our high street when all we are trying to do is provide better choice on food.

Darren
Of course we should have another supermarket. Its been done with Telecoms so why not?I'd love to see the smug smiles wiped off the shopkeepers faces who have been ripping us off for years.Tesco or Wal-Mart get my vote.Cue the hard luck stories and reasons why not from fat cat monopolising beans....
