Mustard oil is a vivid, spicy and nutty oil that is widely used in Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi cuisine, but also in Chinese and Russian cooking and in Italian mostarda, a candied fruit preserve.
Buyer's guide
Due to the high levels of erucic acid present in pure mustard oil, it is not licensed for sale as a food in the UK. Bottles of 100% mustard oil are sold in the UK marked "for external use only". Newer blends of mustard oil that are low in erucic acid are now for sale, labelled "edible mustard oil".
