Leonard Bernstein knew it too: there鈥檚 solitude as well as thrills when he takes Manhattan in On the Town. And Sergei Rachmaninov, exiled forever from Russia, explored new worlds in a glittering, Art Deco streamliner of a Third Symphony that never quite shakes off its sense of loss.
