Complaint

This edition of Question Time focused on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI).  A viewer complained that the programme lacked impartiality because all the members of the panel were broadly supportive of AI, and included no-one who was critical of it or opposed to its wider adoption.

Outcome

The test of impartiality is not the composition of the panel but whether, taken as a whole, the programme gave audiences an adequately broad and appropriately challenging exploration of the principal issues raised by the topic it set out to address.  While for the most part agreeing that AI had the potential to deliver economic and societal benefits, the panellists also acknowledged the seriousness of concerns about its impact on employment, equality and the concentration of power, and the range of questions from the audience prompted what the ECU considered to be a rounded and appropriately balanced discussion.
