How do I listen live?

Ģ��Ƶ Sounds website

Head to the top of the homepage to the Listen Live rail. Click on the station you’d like to listen to. Use the scroll buttons on the right to find all of our network stations.

If you've been listening to one of the National stations, or your local radio station (based on your postcode), the last two that you've listened to will appear at the beginning of the rail, so you can access your favourite live streams faster.

To browse all stations, including all local Ģ��Ƶ radio stations, select View all: Stations.

You can also find all stations, streams and live programmes via Search. Click the 'Search Sounds' bar (or magnifying glass if you're on the mobile website) on the top right, then type in the station, stream or live programme that you’re looking for. If there’s a match then it’ll appear at the top of your search results.

Press 'Play' on the live stream to begin listening.

The live stream will play on the same page in a bar at the bottom, allowing you to continue browsing the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds website. You can use any of the navigation tools in the bar to control the playback. The Play Queue will show what's coming up on the schedule.

Ģ��Ƶ Sounds app on mobiles and tablets

On the homepage, use the station dial to find all of our network stations. Just tap on a station to start the live stream. To find our local Ģ��Ƶ radio stations, select 'Stations & Schedules.'

You can also find all stations, streams and live programmes via Search. Tap 'Search' on the bottom right, then type in the station, stream or live programme that you’re looking for. If there’s a match then it’ll appear at the top of your search results.

When listening to a live stream, you can press the downward arrow at the top of the screen to continue scrolling through the app while the live stream plays. Just press the pause button to stop playback. You can pause (for up to 15 minutes), rewind and restart the live stream.

Ģ��Ƶ Sounds app on TVs

On the homepage, you'll find all our national radio stations and your local station at the top. Scrolling across and selecting 'View all' will let you browse and select any national or local station. Click on a live stream to start listening.

You’ll be sent to a new page where the live stream will start to play. If Live Restart is available, you'll see a 'Start' button which will rewind the programme to the beginning, otherwise you can listen at the live point.

How can I get Ģ��Ƶ Sounds on my Hi-Fi?

If you want to listen to Ģ��Ƶ Sounds on your Hi-Fi, there are several options available depending on the equipment you have and how you listen to Sounds.

Bluetooth, Chromecast & AirPlay

If your Hi-Fi was manufactured in the past few years, it may have Bluetooth, Chromecast or AirPlay functionality. If so, you can connect to the Hi-Fi from your mobile or tablet device and use the Sounds app to control what you listen to.

Most modern televisions also have Bluetooth functionality, so you could also connect your television to the Hi-Fi via Bluetooth and use the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds app on your television.

Some smart speakers may also be able to connect to a Hi-Fi using Bluetooth.

If your Hi-Fi does not have Bluetooth, Chromecast, or AirPlay functionality, you could adapt it with a Bluetooth audio adaptor. This would connect to an audio input on your Hi-Fi. Search online for a 'Bluetooth Wi-Fi adaptor.'

Wired connection

If you can access Ģ��Ƶ Sounds on your television, computer, mobile or tablet, you should be able to connect the device to your Hi-Fi using an appropriate cable.

It’s best to first identify what input types are available to you on the Hi-Fi, then search online for the right cable, ensuring you’ve determined the output connector type of your device. Some mobile or tablets may require an adaptor that you connect to an audio cable if the device does not have a 3.5mm mini jack output.

Use the Web streaming option on the device

If your Hi-Fi has an internet radio function, use that. If you can’t find Ģ��Ƶ Radio stations on your device, speak to your manufacturer to check the device is supported and always check prior to purchasing a device with the manufacturer/retailer.

Streamer device

A Streamer is a Hi-Fi separate that can be connected to an existing Hi-Fi system that uses an internet connection to play media including radio stations and podcasts. It’s recommended that prior to purchasing, to check if a particular device is supported. You will need to speak to the manufacturer and/or retailer about this. We also recommend that the device supports either DASH or HLS audio streaming formats. Search online for 'Wi-Fi streamer.'

What audio streaming formats do the Ģ��Ƶ Support?

We recommend that a device supports the DASH and HLS formats. You may wish to check with the manufacturer and/or retailer whether it supports these formats (and whether they support Ģ��Ƶ Radio content) prior to purchasing.

How do I find out if a device is supported?

We have information on connected TV devices that are supported. We also state requirements for mobile/tablet devices as well as information on smart speakers. For any other devices, you’ll need to check with the manufacturer and/or the retailer.

How do I fast forward, rewind, pause or play on Ģ��Ƶ Sounds?

The play controls you’ll see depend on whether you’re listening live or on demand, and on which device you're using.

Can't see the play controls? If the screen is magnified or zoomed in, or if you're using the website on a phone or tablet, some controls may not be visible. Clicking or tapping on the playback bar will open the full controls.

I'm listening live

Volume button
Select this to adjust the volume or mute the volume
START button
This will be available on devices which support Live Restart. Select this to start the live programme from the beginning.
20 button to the left
Use this to rewind the live stream by 20 seconds per click.
Pause button
Use this to pause or resume the live programme. If you pause or interrupt a live stream, it will resume from the moment it was paused*.
20 button to the right
Use this to fast forward the live stream by 20 seconds per click. It isn't possible to fast forward beyond the live point, and this button will be greyed out if you're already at the live point.
LIVE button
Click this to catch up with the live point. This button will be greyed out if you're already at the live point.
Orange line across the screen
This is called the scrub bar. Drag the orange circle at the front of the line (highlighted in the image) backwards or forwards to rewind or fast forward throughout the programme.
Play Queue
On live streams, this will show what's coming up on the schedule. There's also a link to the full station schedule
Playback speed
When listening live, you can slow down the playback speed. When the live stream has been rewound, you can choose from any of the speed options to listen back.

*Live pause on the mobile/tablet app will save your position for up to 15 minutes before returning to the live position.

Where can I find the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds app?

Connected TVs
If your TV is supported, you'll find the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds app either pre-installed or in the app or players store/menu.
YouView
If you've got a YouView box or a compatible YouView-enabled Sony TV, you can find Ģ��Ƶ Sounds by:
- Selecting Ģ��Ƶ Sounds from the Players section
- Listening to a Ģ��Ƶ radio programme from the last seven days via the YouView electronic programme guide
- Listening to a Ģ��Ƶ radio programme from the last seven days via the YouView On Demand area

You'll need to make sure your TV device is connected to the internet.

How can I listen live?

On the homepage, you'll find all our national radio stations and your local station at the top. Select a live stream to start listening. Scroll across and select 'View all' to see all National and Local stations.

You’ll be sent to a new page where the live stream will start to play. If Live Restart is available, you'll see a Start button which will rewind the programme to the beginning, otherwise you can listen at the live point.

When listening to any programme, live or on-demand, you can minimise/maximise the playback screen using the two arrows to the right of the playback area.

How can I listen on demand?

Use the menu on the left to choose from Ģ��Ƶ, Music, Podcasts, My Sounds and Search to find the programmes you love.

Scroll down the homepage to find recommendations, Continue Listening and Next Episodes, music mixes, Categories and much more. Click on any programme to start playing.

You'll find extensive lists of available programmes within Categories. To view all categories, scroll to the right and select 'View all'. For help with categories, have a look here: Where can I find categories on Ģ��Ƶ Sounds?

To find music programmes and mixes, use the Music icon on the left. Scroll down through the highlights (and across to 'View all'), or view the music categories to find music you're in the mood for.

Choose the Podcasts icon to view the list of podcasts that we have to offer.

Scroll down through the highlights and categories (and across to 'View all' in that section), or scroll to the bottom to see all of the podcasts we have to offer.

Select a programme to start playing. To see all episodes of a particular programme, select 'More episodes.' In here, you can view and play other episodes, and you can subscribe to the show.

You'll also find My Sounds in the left-hand menu, where you can access your Latest list, Subscribed programmes and Bookmarked programmes and episodes.

Can I search for programmes?

Yes, you can. Navigate to the menu on the left-hand side and click on Search. Then, type in the name of the programme or podcast you're looking for.

Do I have to sign in?

Yes, you do. Check the How do I sign in to Ģ��Ƶ Sounds on my connected TV? page for guidance on how to sign in.

You’ll need to change the system volume on your device. The volume buttons are usually located on the side of the mobile or tablet, or you can adjust the volume in your device settings.

If you're using Chromecast, you can still change the volume using the controls on your device.

Term	Meaning
Android	Android is an operating system designed by Google for mobiles, tablets, and other handheld devices.
Bandwidth	Bandwidth measures the amount of data that can transfer through a communications channel over a given period of time.
Beta	A beta application or website is one which is open for testing before it becomes available as the standard version to the public. Providing feedback on beta versions helps developers find out what to fix or improve before making that version standard.
Bitrate	This is the speed at which information in a file is read by hardware. A high bitrate file will contain more detailed data, so it will take longer to be processed.
Browser	The browser is the software on your device that you use to open websites. Examples of browsers are Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer.
Cache	Your browser saves information from websites to help them load more quickly next time you visit them. This information is saved to the cache.
Cookies	A cookie is a piece of data saved on your browser to remember the settings you've saved on websites you've visited.
Device	A device is the piece of equipment you're using to access Ģ��Ƶ Sounds. For example, a mobile, computer or tablet.
Download	When you download something, you take it from the internet and save it on your device so that you can listen to it when you're not connected to the internet.
DRM	DRM means Digital Rights Management. It's a way of controlling how different types of files are used.

Hardware	Hardware is what we call the physical components of a piece of technology. For example, a hard drive, mouse, keyboard, monitor, or laptop can all be considered pieces of hardware.
HTML	HTML means HyperText Markup Language. This is a universal type of computer code used for making websites and controlling how they are displayed.

Install / uninstall	Installing means adding a piece of software to your device. For example, you can install the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds app onto your mobile. Uninstalling means removing this piece of software from your device.
Internet Service Provider (ISP)	Your internet service provider is who supplies your internet connection.
iOS	iOS is an operating system designed by Apple for their handheld products, for example, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
IP address	Your IP address is what websites use to determine where in the world you are accessing the internet from. IP addresses can be manipulated though, especially if you're using a VPN, so it might not always accurately reflect where you are geographically.

Mobile data	Mobile data, also known as 3G or 4G, is a way to access the internet from your mobile or tablet device. Most people will use their mobile data when they don't have access to WiFi. How much data you have access to is usually determined by your mobile network provider.
On demand	An on-demand programme is one that has already been broadcast on the radio and that you can listen to whenever you want -- on demand.
Online / offline	Something can be described as online if it's connected to the internet. If something is offline, it's not connected to the internet. For example, you can listen to programmes online if your device is connected to the internet. When you download a programme, you can listen to it when your device isn't connected to the internet, and is offline.
Operating System (OS)	The operating system is the system your computer, mobile or tablet runs in order to function. The OS enables your device to run applications and perform tasks. It's the interface between you and your computer.
PC	PC means Personal Computer. This is usually a laptop or a desktop computer with a separate hard drive, monitor, mouse and keyboard.
Persistent player	The persistent player is the playback area on the website and mobile app. The programme or live stream plays on a bar at the bottom of the page and remains on screen while you browse the Sounds website or app.
PIN	PIN means Personal Identification Number. We'll ask you for a PIN if you set up a parental guidance lock.
Platform	This is a combination of hardware and software which software can run on. For example, our Ģ��Ƶ Sounds software can run on mobiles, tablets and computers, which are all platforms.
Podcast	A podcast is an edited piece of content which can be a complete radio programme, an edited extract or highlights from a programme, or completely unique content with a particular theme made to be subscribed and listened to as a series.
Programme	A programme is a full radio production that you can listen to from beginning to end. It might only have one episode, or it might have several episodes. These episodes could be split into multiple series.

Term	Meaning
Register	Registering means signing up for a service by providing some details, such as your name or email address.
RSS	RSS means Really Simple Syndication. RSS feeds are lists of information taken from a website or service and updated in real-time with any new information added to that website. They allow you to stay updated when something new, like a podcast, becomes available.
Software	Software is what we call the components of technology which are coded into the computer, and not physical. Applications, programs and operating systems which tell the computer what to do are considered software. For example, our Ģ��Ƶ Sounds app for mobiles and tablets is a piece of software.
Stream	Streaming is listening to something online. You can stream by finding what you want to listen to on the website or app and simply pressing play.
Subscribe	Subscribing on Ģ��Ƶ Sounds means you'll be kept up to date when there are new episodes of that programme or podcast. You won't have to search for new episodes because they'll be added to your Latest list in My Sounds when they're available.
Subtitles	Subtitles are words that appear on your screen transcribing the content that's currently playing. These are being trialled on several programmes on the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds app and website.
Troubleshooting	Troubleshooting is the process of following some steps to try to figure out what's going wrong if something is broken. You can also try troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem.

Term	Meaning
URL	URL means Uniform Resource Locator and it's another way of referring to a website address. This is what you type into the address bar to go to a website. For example, "www.bbc.co.uk/sounds" is a URL which will take you to the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds website.
Username	This is a name which identifies you when you sign in to a service. You can choose it yourself and it doesn't need to be your name.

You'll find a list of our available audiobooks in the audiobooks category.

Scroll down the homepage on any device to find the Categories section. Tap 'View All,' then head to the Audiobooks category.

Categories can also be found in the search page on the mobile and TV apps, and within the Explore menu on the mobile app.

You can also search 'Audiobooks' to quickly find the Audiobooks category.

How do I find podcasts?

Podcasts can be found in the Podcast category on the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds website, mobile/tablet app or TV app.

On Alexa devices, simply ask "Alexa, ask Ģ��Ƶ Sounds to play [name of content]." For more information, have a look here: Podcasts and music mixes on Alexa

On the website, look for the 'Podcasts' menu, next to My Sounds, Music and Ģ��Ƶ.

On the mobile/tablet app, you'll find podcasts by tapping the 'Explore' button on the bottom of any page, or by searching for 'Podcasts.'

On the TV app, you'll see the 'Podcast' option on menu on the left-hand side.

Scroll and explore the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds Ģ��Ƶpage to find the most popular podcasts across the Ģ��Ƶ at the moment, as well as more of the best music, radio and podcast content the Ģ��Ƶ has to offer.

If you know the title of a specific podcast that you're keen to find, the search function should be useful.

What is a podcast?

A podcast is an edited piece of content which can be a complete radio programme, an edited extract or highlights from a programme, or completely unique content with a particular theme made to be subscribed and listened to as a series. Not every radio programme is available as a podcast.

You can listen to or download most podcasts for free on the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds app or from the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds website on your computer. From our website, you can download many podcasts as MP3 files. You can transfer the MP3 files to a portable device, such as an MP3 player, to listen to on the move. On the Ģ��Ƶ Sounds app, podcasts are downloaded directly onto the app, so you can enjoy them at your leisure.

You can also subscribe to receive a podcast, rather like you might subscribe to a magazine and get it delivered each week. This way you will automatically receive the latest episode of your chosen podcast as soon as it's available.
