Iain Crichton Smith uses all three types of voice in Consider the Lilies, and moves very smoothly between them. Let's look at a specific passage to examine the effect of the different voices.

Read the section from Chapter 15 beginning "He read the letter very carefully. So that was it indeed!Â…" to "Â…But, no, he said firmly to himself, it will not always be, this waste, this terrible waste." (pg 101 - 102)

Now, identify what type of voice is being used in each of the following quotes:
Quote Direct Speech Internal Monologue External Narrative
He read the letter again very carefully.
Wasn't there something wrong about that ending?
You know, Mrs Scott, living in a small village can be very difficult.
He listened with horror, with great pity.
Why had he sided quite so unthinkingly with the husband before?
