Duror’s standing at the edge of the harbour, contemplating his fate. How does he feel about his life and his future? How does this further enhance your understanding of him as a character?
Duror appears to be longing for death here. Which aspects of his life do you think have contributed to these feelings? He doesn’t believe he would be successful at killing himself. What does this tell you about the value Duror places on his own self-worth? How might these feelings contradict the feelings other characters might have about him?
We’re also given an insight into Duror’s feelings about the churchgoers who’ll be passing by in the morning. Why do you think he’s so disillusioned by religion? How do the other characters in the book feel about religion? What do you think Jenkins might be saying about society?
