This normally happens in the summer months, due to high pressure weather conditions in the atmosphere, allowing radio signals to travel further. The cause is an atmospheric effect known as Sporadic-E and can last from a few seconds up to an hour or more.

At night medium wave radio signals can travel much further than during the day. This means your radio is able to receive more radio channels either using the same frequency as the service you are listening to or adjacent to that frequency. The result is a higher level of interference and a deterioration in both the sound and coverage.

It is not necessary to have an external aerial to receive MW and LW transmissions. If you are using a portable radio the aerial will be built in, all you need to do is turn the radio to improve reception.

It is possible that while you are traveling that you drive through an area with limited reception. This can be due trees, hills or buildings blocking the signal, once you have passed through this area your reception should improve. If your reception is continually poor you might want to check your aerial has not become water damaged and that none of the leads have become loose.

It often sounds like birds tweeting and happens if there is another frequency being transmitted near the one you are listening to. This can be caused by high pressure; during fine weather radio signals can travel much further than normal. These signals can be both UK and foreign stations. Unfortunately, here is nothing that can be done and the problem will go away when the weather changes.

A loss of pre-set stations usually happens with battery radios when the batteries have run out and are not changed promptly.

Having changed the batteries, re-memorise the stations you need. In future, change the batteries as soon as reception deteriorates or is lost, or use mains power if that is an option. This should prevent loss of pre-set stations.

Why can't I listen to Radio 4 on MW?

Radio 4 will no longer be available on medium wave. Medium wave listeners need to retune their radio to Radio 4 on FM or DAB, or listen via smart speaker, Ģ��Ƶ Sounds or digital television.

This is no longer available due to being removed as a service.
