Editorial Standards – a Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ statement

The Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ is to establish an Editorial Standards Board to oversee the Corporation's response to this week's announcement of serious editorial breaches in a number of programmes.

The Board, to be chaired by the Deputy Director-General, Mark Byford, will report to the Director-General.

The Board, which will comprise of directors of programme and content areas with other directors and senior staff, will also be attended by an independent director from the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Executive Board, Samir Shah.

The purpose of the Board will be to discuss key editorial standards facing the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ overall and develop policy from it; to review the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ's editorial compliance systems and ensure that the programme of action announced by the Director-General this week is implemented as a matter of priority and in full.

The Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ, with the approval of the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Trust, has appointed Will Wyatt CBE, the former Chief Executive of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Broadcast, to conduct an independent inquiry to establish a full understanding of the events surrounding the publication by the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ at a press launch for the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ One Autumn season of misleading footage relating to Her Majesty the Queen.

Mr Wyatt's inquiry will report to the Director-General in September. The Director-General will present the report to the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Trust in October. The findings will be made public.

1. The new Editorial Standards Board will be a sub-committee of the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Direction Group, which is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ.

2. Will Wyatt CBE is a former Chief Executive of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Broadcast (1996-9) and Managing Director, Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Television (1991-6). A distinguished programme maker and television executive, he began his career as a journalist, and has been a producer and executive producer in Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Television, Head of Documentary Features and Assistant Managing Director, Network Television. As Chief Executive, Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Broadcast, he was responsible for all of the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ's output in the UK, including network television, radio, online, education and regional broadcasting. He is currently Chairman of Human Capital plc and until recently was Chairman of the University of the Arts, London. He is a Fellow and former President of the Royal Television Society.
