Nicola Benedetti won Young Musician of the Year in 2004

Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Young Musician 2006 - the final



The Final of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Young Musician 2006 will be held at The Sage Gateshead on Saturday 20 May at 2.00pm, and is broadcast on Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ TWO at 5.20pm the same day.

Ìý

The Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ's biennial classical music competition is aimed at discovering future classical stars and exceptional musical talent and has become firmly established as Britain's premier classical music competition for young people.

Ìý

Twenty-five talented young musicians are in the semi-finals, broadcast on Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ FOUR in the week leading up to the final (Saturday 13 to Thursday 18 May).

Ìý

Five of these talented musicians will perform in the final, which is supported by the Tabor Foundation and will be performed in front of a sold-out audience.

Ìý

Finalists will be announced on Friday 19 May.

Ìý

The winner receives the coveted title Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Young Musician of the Year and a Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Young Musician Travel Award to promote his/her musical studies as well as a Waterford Crystal trophy.

Ìý

In addition, the Walter Todds Bursary is awarded to a performer who does not reach the final but shows great promise.

Ìý

And the inaugural Tabor Foundation Award is given to a competitor to further his/her musical development and help them realise their full potential.

The Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Young Musician of the Year competition for keyboard, string, brass and woodwind players was launched in 1978 by Humphrey Burton and the late Walter Todds of the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ's then Television Music Department.

Ìý

Percussion was introduced as a fifth category in 1994.

Ìý

Many previous winners and finalists have gone on to develop major international careers, among them Stephen Hough, Thomas Adès and Nicola Benedetti.

Nicola Benedetti - A Winning Story, an intimate portrait of the brilliant young violinist who was named Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Young Musician of the Year in 2004, will be broadcast on Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ TWO on Saturday 13 May at 5.40pm.
