The Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ's Director of Strategy and Distribution and architect of Freeview, Carolyn Fairbairn, has decided to leave the organisation after seven years.

She and her husband have decided to take time out from their careers to spend a year travelling around the world with their three children.

Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Director-General Mark Thompson said today: "Carolyn has been the driving force behind some of the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ's most momentous decisions over recent years.

"She was an architect of Greg Dyke's One Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ, led the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ's prescient move to launch Freeview and was the primary author of our manifesto for Charter Review Building Public Value.

"She is one of the most dedicated people in the business and, while I and many colleagues across the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ will miss her energy and wise counsel, we understand her priority to put her family first."

Carolyn Fairbairn said: "The opportunities to take stock of one's life and do something radical are rare. I'm lucky enough to be able to do that and, although it is a difficult decision, I am leaving the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ at the end of one very exciting chapter and the beginning of another.

"I have loved my time at the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ and the many different and inspiring people I've worked with."

Carolyn is a member of the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ's Executive Board.

She was previously on the Executive Committee led by Greg Dyke and a former Director of Strategy at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Worldwide where she developed the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ's plans to maximise commercial opportunities in the UK and around the world.

Before joining the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ in 1997 Carolyn was a member of the Downing Street Policy Unit with responsibility for policy development in health.

She formerly spent seven years working as a management consultant with McKinsey and Company.

Carolyn has also worked as a financial journalist on The Economist and as a development economist for the World Bank.
