Using his fingers, Stanley created Tribute to a Working Man,Ìýwhich was inspired by his working life and by an abstract painting, The Hopes of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ by Howard Hodgkin. Stanley, who lives in Wythenshawe, took up painting as a hobby. He says he's thrilled to win the competition. “I feel 20 years younger because it’s given me lots to think about." People and art The Inspired By..competition was created by Manchester Art Gallery to celebrate Adult Learners Week andÌýMuseums and Galleries month. "The competition is great for connecting people and art works at Manchester Art Gallery," says Meg Parnell, curator, lifelong learning at the Gallery. "Judging the competition is always hard, as people are inspired by so many different things." Stanley joins nine other winners, whose work will be on show at the Gallery this summer. Other winners include Kevin Holt from Warrington who decided to base his painting, The Rich Young Man, on Pompeo Batoni's painting of Sir Gregory Page-Turner. Kevin's painting is of rich young footballer Wayne Rooney, as opposed to Batoni's, which is of a young aristocrat. Verna Hoyle from Chorlton created her own vision of Manchester’s Venice, which was inspired by Canalletto's The Church of San Gorgio Maggiore. The artists' work will be on show at the Gallery from May 22 - July 22. |
