Life Enriching…

By Ryan Morrison
The States have just approved a new brand for Jersey. Tell us what you think of it…

Jersey logo

The small gold bird above the word Jersey has been officially adopted as the island's logo as part of a wider branding exercise that cost around £240,000.

The logo will be used on all official websites, brochures and other marketing material to promote the island locally and overseas.

The islands new official strap line and brand message is ‘Life Enriching’, which according to the official brand guidelines is “the promise we make to everyone that lives, visits, works or does business in Jersey.”

It then goes on to say “we promise that their lives will be enriched by the experience that is Jersey.”

However, although the words ‘Life Enriching’ are part of the official brand they won’t have to be used on marketing material.

Mike King from the Economic Development Department says the branding is clear and to the point.

He told us “what it is is a brand that has been built up from the bottom up by consulting with people in the various sectors and areas in the island over an extended period.

“It’s really trying to capture everything that is Jersey and use that to promote Jersey as a destination for both visitors and indeed investment.

“It really does describe what the island is and how the island wants to present itself into those markets.”

Key strengths

The new brand has been approved by the Chief Minister and Economic Development Minister after detailed market research that showed the message successfully promoted the islands key industries.

According to the brand guidelines the branding was built by looking at the strengths of the islands four key sectors and finding common threads.

While branding the island they drew from tourism that Jersey is a very real and genuine place.

From finance it’s suggested Jersey is a sophisticated, stable and quality place and agriculture brings generosity and authenticity to the brand.

The islands community is the core of the brand, apparently providing an independent spirit.

Consultation

As with every decision that’s made in Jersey, this one went through a process of consultation - 18 months worth of consultation in fact.

Jersey Cows

Workshops were held in the early and design stages with members of the public that, according to the press release were “aimed at defining and describing what it is that makes Jersey special”.

The £240,000 has been spent over the past 18 months developing the brand, the logo and a range of materials that can be used by organisations involved with Jersey.

Chief Minister Senator Frank Walker said alternative designs had been developed and tested, but none had received such positive feedback.

Not for us?

Although there was extensive consultation over the design and brand with islanders does it really matter if people in Jersey like it or not?

One of the main roles of the new brand will be to attract tourists to Jersey so if islanders don’t like the design but it works in bringing visitors to the island will it still be judged as a success?

How important is a logo and brand image for the island? Is Jersey’s natural beauty enough to sell it or, in an ever increasingly competitive market do we need to push that little bit harder?

Soon to be a Jerseyman
I'm in the process of moving to Jersey from England... and I must say that this "tag line" says exactly why I'm doing it.

C.C RODGERS
This is absolutly true!!!I went for a drive with my wife the other day and she said look, on st Marys church there was a poster that read Jesus life enriching. Well it made me laugh out loud. The golden bird was there on the poster to. Lets hope senator walker dosent moan about copyright infringement

pierre frogger
yeah and the £10,000 toad in Charing Cross is a pile of sh-t as well!

é
I don't like it... despite how much it did or didn't cost... it's boring! “It really does describe what the island is and how the island wants to present itself into those markets.”...That makes no sense to me at all!

Gary
Dave A - the total actual cost, as admitted by Senator Walker will be £500,000. This, of course, does not include the disposal of paper with the old logo and the printing and IT for all paper with the new logo. these costs, both financial and environmantal, will also be high. Why couldn't we keep the old one?

FRANCES COURTNESS
"It really does describe what the island is and how the island wants to present itself into those markets.”Quote from Mike King. How does it do this? He must know something that I don't as I have lived here all my life and have never wanted to present myself or my island as a golden bird. Perhaps he is confusing it for himself as the island that laid his golden egg!

George F
I have never seen something so un professional in my life! Its awful why do we need change anyway?

J.J FAIRLIGHT
The bannana has special aphrodisiac qualities hence the sticking out part of it.If you look closely you will understand the hidden message contained within the symbol. Hence old men get excited by it and obtain life enriching experiences that were not avilable to them since there teens!!!!

Dave
Saw the 'Slideshow' style tourism presentation the other night. Could not the budget have included some helicopter time to get some stunning and dynamic footage of our castles, beaches, shorelines etc. (Maybe not the cows, potential stampede).

Dave A
I am sick and tired of the people who love to knock anything to do with this brilliant island. I think the logo is fine, we have got to put all our support with projects like this. Anyone who is not happy with the "flying banana" should realise that the money spent on the design was not £250,000 please can the knockers of the island get their facts right.

Nick
Well there is one small consolation for the designers - its better than the new Olympic 2012 logo... but thats not hard really!

Marcel Guilliame
Don't knock Frank and his council. They try hard. We all make mistakes. Katie's right. For all that money we will also get a new video and help tourism. When people see our logo thay are bound to book in at the West Hill for 2 weeks.

Trevor Le Tocq
I think this is money really well spent. Well said Katie. What we need right now is people we can trust, who we can believe in, who have a vision for our future and know what they are doing. Senator's Ozouf and Walker are clearly men of great intellect, with marketing savvy, brand awareness and real creative flair. You can just tell that by they way communicate with the electorate. So get real Jersey, stop complaining and lets behind our golden dove of peace!!

Maurice Fromage
What is wrong with the Jersey Cow it is known all over the world.

Katie
You people have got to put some perspective on it. The money didn't just go on the logo, some great branding work was provided of how Jersey should market itself, which if you read it makes a lot of sense.Yeah I don't particularly like the actual logo but the rest of the work the company did is really worthwhile and substantial.

Mik Le Quesne
A golden bird - must be something to do with Ozouf!

Ricky Martin
The Arts Trust budget was cut by £60,000 this year. That means that local creative people will have even less opportunity to develop the very talents that will help to make Jersey a culturally relevant place that has a strong sense of its own identity. It is wrong that ministers have chosen to lavish so much money on a meaningless campaign that re-inforces the appaling image of Jersey as a greedy intraverted and self satisfied society.Time to walk Walker.

Under The Rock ...
(as in, what will you find if you turn over rocks and look at what is underneath?)I hae just read through all the comments and am staggered ... Did FW and cronies not realise this, has 18 months' consultation not shown them that this would be the general opinion? And as to his comments as to local people only getting jobs if they are up to it, well, q.e.d.!!

Chris C
The council of ministers should come out and apologise to the people of Jersey, admit they got it wrong and agree to put the project out to tender locally. That would be the decent thing to do. It won't happen of course because decency is a currency they seem to have very little understanding of.Bring on the election. I can't wait to see some of thier faces when they realise they have to apply their limited talents in th ereal world. And who would employ them?

Mike
I live in the UK and the newspapers constantly moaning about how its going down the drain with immigration, the NHS is on its knees, there is a lack of respect from kids etc... Having seen the waste of money spent on this logo, at least its better here than in Jersey!

zz skinner
This bannana grew to close to cap de la haugue.

Haute Vallée students
its life enriching for the people who got £240,000 out of the States for designing a banana skin! when sisxteen year olds know how the island SHOULD be run then wait untill we're old enough to vote!!

john .G
what you idiots omfg you spent 240,000 on that stupid

john
are you stupid i could have done that with my eyes closed 240,000

Miss F. You
this is stupid. they dont care about us, the people of jersey, they only care about a stupid f-ck-d-p banana. they should stuff it and go back to our old simbol. i'm 13 for gods sake and i think it cr-p!!!!

de Burgos
Children coul have done better and cheaper

Chug Drummond-Forbes
Complete waste of money! Why didn't they go round the schools and organise a competition for the kids to design it? I'm sure the result would have been better, and would have cosdt nothing!

Dan Daree
Life enriching?For who exactly.

R.S.M Diddley squat
Has to be a cukoo as a symbol of Jersey everytime!!

eavesdropper
Frank "I think this is great, we came in under budget and beat the cost of the tourism web site by 10K, that was only £250K, apparantly that will work soon, anyhow if they don't like it we can do it again next year as we've got another half a billion to spend and we also get some GST as a bonus"

GS
With a bit of luck the states will get on this burd (intentional) and depart for warmer climates as it migrates, hopefully for ever.

tbjjsy
May be a mushroom would be a better logo as Mr Walker & the gang keep us in the dark & feed us on b-llsh-t, Mr walker & the gang should travel & see how Jersey is pecevied around the world, in my many travels Jersey is famous for Cows, Milk,Bull seman, Beachs, History, & the many traveling Jersey folk around the world, but no golden dove, seagull, dolfin, ink stain, but maybe a golden goose to some consultants. PS looks like a tea stain to me

jerseylive fan
When will the 'ordinary' people on this island realise that those in power simply DO NOT CARE what the tax paying electorate think. It's obvious (basic subliminal psychology) that by using the colour gold and the word 'enriching', the only people this is aimed at attracting, is those with money to invest in property or business.Finance is the God here, democracy, common sense and public opinion count for nothing. This rebranding is not designed for increasing tourist numbers or appealing to younger people.Look what happened last year with Jersey Live - a big storm about who should pay for the overbearing police presence and threats of this years event being cancelled. Yet here we are discussing the £240,000 thats just been given away to 'consultants'.The politicians and decision makers in this island are in it for themselves, they have NO INTEREST IN YOU OR I. Get over it !!

Spooky
£240,000 - Bargain !

Steve
How much ?£170k for a tiny piece of bird ?

Mike
WHY didn't we use the excellent Tourism 'Jersey' logo, with the blue (sea) and green (land) symbolising the Gulf of St Malo - all this for nothing! Then the £250,000 could have been used intelligently (?)

Joan Bevis
What a waste of OUR money.

Chris
Great - I'm waiting for essential surgery and it can't be done for 18months becuase of funding and this thing appears...what a complete waste of money - what does it show about our beautiful island?

Ed
It looks like the Dove on my Dove soap, which they call Dove Cream Bar... Jersey is famous for its milk and cream so there is your link.Once again a load of consultants will walk away with a fortune (soon be able to afford to live in Jersey). How will this attract more people to the Island ??

John Germain
Since all this money has been spent on what I perceive as of no use to my business, is there any chance of being exempt from the maniacal strictures?

Kathi Spencer
£240,000, yet another consultant is laughing all the way to the bank, Jersey is indeed life enriching - for some.

ACG
"Life Enriching" for whom? Not for the owners of small businesses, who are described as being easily able to to absorb GST whilst being prevented from passing it onto customers. Enriching for foreign owners of local businesses who will escape paying local income tax on profits earned locally.

Sqn leader faggot
Quite honestly i thought that was a bananna skin.A bananna would be a great representation of Jersey as its full of fruits. They spent £240,000 on this???That sort of proves my point"Only" Jersey would spend that amount on this.Dumb and dumber Jersey "a".

Fiona K
I much prefered the Jersey Cow and States "three lions rampant" logo- this looks like nothing the island has to offer, great beaches, food, history, heritage, etc. And as for the font of the word Jersey - well it might as well as been Times New Roman. If your going to create an image to suit the island, at least make it unique...

JP St Martin
Try a Google search for Dove,Seen it before?£240,000 Amazing!

John Bevis
How ridiculous to spend £240,000 on ddesigning a flying banana ! With that money the States could have honoured Mr. Walker's promise to give free TV licences to all over-75s, a promise which has been broken.

offmyrock
UNBELIEVABLE!!£240,000 for a squiggle!!What has a golden bird got to do with Jersey? How does a squiggle - that looks like a design for a regional airline from the 1980's -cost a quarter of a million?lj- i think youre putting down your 6 year old son. I mean i dont know him but I cant believe that he couldnt do BETTER!!!

And the 'branding guidelines' could be copied from The Dummies guide to Graphic Design!!The States of Jersey is now simply a cash dispensing machine for 'consultants' from everywhere on earth! They must look at Jersey as a load of backward islanders with too much money!and WE ARE!!!Our government just GIVES IT AWAY as if it was growing on the side of the roads!!

What was this'consultation'?I dont remember being asked if the Government could give away £240,000 of my and my fellow Jersey residents money for a squiggle.Who said YES thats a great idea?¨The States of Jersey need to give away MORE of our money¨

I'm off to France to live this year!Been planning it for 10 years as I saw the writing on the wall for Jersey back in the early/mid 90's!I pity all those working people in Jersey that will have to carry on working to pay for all these 'Grand Schemes', dreamt up by third rate bureaucrats whove never had to earn the money they so freely spend on working peoples behalf!

Tom W.
It may have been possible to do it "slightly" cheaper and get a better product by having a competition in all Jersey schools with art students !Giving the winner a prize (for example £2500.00) plus smaller monetary prizes for 2nd and 3rd. in the competition. Or do "they" think there is no talent is Jersey.

mr t darragh
yet again the states show that they will spend our tax money like water £240,000 for a logo plus the cycle race which turns out to have cost us taxpayers 25000 euros for a event that now we are told will not come back for at least 4 years if ever .plus the hold up for traffic another own goal.

Anon
It already looks dated, the word 'enriching' will have everybody in the world thinking it's a nice place to dodge taxes and the 'bird' is meaningless... and gold, again pushing the 'everybody here is loaded' theme.Basically the concept of the 'logo' has been designed by someone who's never been here. It smacks of a mainland perception of Jersey. All we can do is hope the logo is just the bad egg and the rest of the campaign has had more thought put into it than what you'd get from an episode of Bergerac and a look at Jeffrey Archer's accounts.

Darren Le Geyt
In one word:CrapIf the pseudo-bird is the best they could come up with then the States should have held a competition locally with a 50k prize.Another demonstration of why Walker et al should be kicked out. Funding worthless consulting whilst faling to fund public events that would bring in actual tourists.

lj
more money wasted. wat a load of trash... really. who gives permission to spend that type of money on something my 6 year old son could draw.

Peter Hedditch
I might be wrong but isn't it not so long ago we spent loads of money on the beach logo. I seem to recall there was some controversy at that time too? Nothing new under the sun then!

The golden seagull
someone please remind me where we can find this golden bird in jersey? Was it discovered by Gerry Durrell?

Robert, Grouville
Why is an oil spill representing Jersey

Adam
I think the image is quite smart and has style.Sqn Gull may think that his kids could knock a brand out in 30 min, I rather doubt this. Rather then keep knocking Jersey, it's time to positive, though with the mess down at the waterfront, this can be difficult to do.Bring back the tower plans, now that was forward thinking.

Plane Mad
I hope the designer wasn't working for European Aviation Safety Agency the bird in the logo is almost identical!

Brands
I fail to see how a golden bird can represent the island.Am I naive in saying this?

Sqn Leader C Gull
240 grand for a picture of a bird, or is it an upside down dolphin ?One of my children could have knocked one out in 30 minutes for the price of a gameboy game. Rather fitting though, using a bird ….Jersey being shat on from above!

Andy Hunter
I would not have picked a bird but do think the States deserve credit for trying to enhance the image of the island. My own view is the bird I think of linked to Jersey is the seagull, not a favourite for tourists as they are pestered on the beach, this one looks like it has just swooped on Jersey! To me the logo looks more like a version of the outline of the North Island of New Zealand.
