How do I create a child profile on Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer?

Setting up a child profile on Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer is quick and easy, and you can do it from any of your devices.

Setting up a profile on the Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer mobile/tablet app:

An adult will need to be signed into the app.
When launching the app, select the + Add Child button on your account screen. If you're already in an adult account, use the blue initial icon on the top left to access the Switch user screen.
Create a display name. There’s a maximum of 50 characters. This can’t include special characters (e.g. %?£).
Enter the date of birth. This is so your child can see content that's appropriate for their age. The maximum age for a child profile is the day before their 13th birthday.

Setting up a child profile on the Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer TV app

Select the pink monster/Add child icon when you open the app, or by selecting the blue and white initial on the top left of the homepage. An adult will need to be signed in already on that TV to set up a child profile.
Enter a display name. There’s a maximum of 50 characters and this can’t include special characters (e.g. %?£).
Date of birth. This is so your child can see content that's appropriate for their age. The maximum age for a child profile is the day before their 13th birthday.
Choose a linked account. If there's more than one adult signed in to Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer on your TV already, you'll need to choose an account to link the child profile to

Setting up a child profile on the Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer website

Head to the iPlayer homepage bbc.co.uk/iplayer
An adult will need to be signed in first to set up a child profile.
Select the blue avatar on the top left of the home screen and choose the 'Add child' option.

Enter the month and year of birth. This is so your child can see content that's appropriate for their age. The maximum age for a child profile is the day before their 13th birthday.

Children will not be able to sign in to other Ģ��Ƶ websites and apps through their profiles.

Can I create more than one child profile?

Yes, you can:

Tap/click the blue avatar on the top right on the mobile/tablet app and website, or go back to the Select Who’s Watching screen on TV
Select the Add Child option again to create another child profile

Can I remove a child profile after it’s been created?

Yes, you can. You'll need to do this on a browser.

Go to your Ģ��Ƶ account settings
Click into the Children's settings tab from the menu on the left-hand side
Click on Delete child profiles
Select the child profile you want to delete
Click the Delete button to confirm

When using the iPlayer TV app after removing a child profile, the profile may still show. Selecting the profile will refresh the account and it will be removed.

Yes, you can!

As well as protecting your children from programmes that may not be suitable, the parental guidance lock can be used to prevent your child from accessing other profiles on the Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer app.

How do I set up parental guidance?

Make sure you're signed in on an adult's profile, then:

Select Settings > Parental Controls > Enable parental controls
Choose and enter a 4-digit PIN and choose and answer a secret question. Tap 'Activate.'

How do I turn the lock on for profile switching?

Once the lock has been set up within the adult profile, it can then be switched on within the same settings screen.

Tap Settings > Parental Controls. Enter your PIN to be taken to the Parental control options.
Tap Profile switching lock to switch on the profile lock. The parental guidance lock can also be switched on here.

Now, when a child profile is switched to an adult profile, the app will require the PIN to be entered.

How do I turn off the lock?

1. Tap Settings > Parental Controls
2. Enter your four-digit PIN
3. Toggle off the profile switching lock. You can also turn off all parental controls, or have only the profile switcher enabled.

How can I change the PIN or password?

Tap Settings > Parental Controls. Enter your PIN.
Tap on PIN and secret question
Make the changes you'd like to make to the PIN and/or secret question
Tap Save

What if I forget my PIN or secret answer?

If you forget your PIN, you can use your secret question to gain access to the parental guidance lock settings in the app.

Tap Settings > Parental Controls
When prompted for the PIN, tap Forgot PIN?
You'll be asked for the answer to your secret question

If you forget your secret answer, tap on 'Forgotten answer?' for instructions on what to do next.

You can change the lock settings via one of the following methods, depending on the device:

Android or Amazon Fire
- Go to your device Settings > Apps > Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer and select Storage and Clear storage or Clear data. This will reset your parental guidance lock, so you can set up a new PIN and secret question/answer.

iOS
- You'll need to remove and then reinstall the Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer app via the Apple App Store in order to reset the parental guidance lock.

With both methods, you will lose any downloaded content in the app.

Will the lock work on my downloads?

Yes, guidance information is displayed for all programmes in the app, whether streamed on-demand or downloaded.

What are the terms and conditions for using the Parental Guidance and Profile Switcher lock?

If you permit a child to use your device, you are solely responsible for determining whether the Ģ��Ƶ content is appropriate for that child to view. The Ģ��Ƶ parental guidance lock provides a way to help you control how guidance-labelled Ģ��Ƶ content may be played on your device. If you turn on the Parental Guidance Lock, the app will not be able to access guidance-labelled content unless you type in your PIN. If you turn on the Profile Switching Lock, a child profile can't be switched to an adult profile without entering the PIN.

What is the Child Experience on Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer?

The Child Experience on iPlayer brings the best of CĢ��Ƶ, CBeebies and other suitable Ģ��Ƶ programmes to one place.

Under-13s can easily find something to watch thanks to more child-friendly categories like Trending, Drama, Funny and Cartoons. And the bright and bold design helps children understand that it's an experience just for them.

Kids can browse and discover age-appropriate programmes, and add their favourites to My Programmes. They can also pick up a show from where they left off on any device. If they're using the Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer mobile/tablet app, they can also download their favourite shows to watch on the go!

What content is available on Child Profiles?

At the moment, Child Profiles can access all CBeebies, CĢ��Ƶ and family-friendly programmes that we know kids love.

The homepage will be tailored to the age of the child who is watching. For example a child aged 0-3 will see CBeebies programmes only on their homepage, with a focus on cartoons, songs and shows for parent and baby to watch together, whereas a 10-12 year old will see a mix of mainly CĢ��Ƶ and family-friendly programmes like Strictly and Doctor Who.

To protect little ones from switching to an adult's profile on the Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer app, we have introduced a Profile Switching Lock. This means that when an adult profile is selected from a child profile, users will need to enter their PIN.

Child profile or child account?

There are two ways for little ones to enjoy the Child Experience on Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer: Child accounts and Child profiles.

Child profiles
Child profiles are used within Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer, and Kids pages across our website. They give children their own personalised view of Ģ��Ƶ iPlayer, allowing them to stream, download, add their favourite programmes and continue watching from where they left off. Child profiles are created and accessed through a signed-in adult account, and are used only for accessing family-friendly programmes.

Child accounts
Child accounts are used across the Ģ��Ƶ, not just for iPlayer; useful for when older kids want to use other parts of the Ģ��Ƶ, for example to join the conversation on CĢ��Ƶ programmes or have their say on Newsround articles. They can access the whole website, including Ģ��Ƶ News and Ģ��Ƶ Sounds. Child accounts are set up by a parent, and permissions are controlled by that linked adult account. Children can sign into their account using a username and password.

Child profiles can be deleted within your account settings. You'll need to do this on the website.
