Stewart Copeland's career, which includes the sale of more than 60 million records worldwide and numerous Awards including five Grammies, started when he formed The Police with bassist Sting and guitarist Andy Summers in 1977.
The rise, success and ultimate demise of the Police over an eight year period were all recorded and kept as a video diary in 8mm film by Stewart Copeland. That diary has become Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out, his feature film debut. This film, which premiered at the Sundance film festival earlier this year, is a fascinating portrait of a band on the rise.
During his subsequent composing career, Stewart Copeland has enjoyed successful collaborations with some of Hollywood's most acclaimed directors, including Francis Ford Coppola, Oliver Stone, Ken Loach and John Hughes. His recent film and television assignments have included Desperate Housewives and Sam Shepard's taut drama Simpatico.
We were delighted to welcome Stewart as a guest at Electric Proms when he discussed the highlights of his career so far. Ian Nathan, who writes for Empire magazine and reviews films on 6 Music, talked to Stewart and invited the audience to ask questions.
